A Rolex loan at Barry's

A Rolex pawn loan is a loan secured by your watch. You bring in your Rolex with a photo ID, we look it over with you at the counter, and you get your loan the same visit: cash for smaller loans, check or wire transfer for larger ones. Your Rolex stays at our Boca Raton store until you repay and pick it up.

There is no credit check, and nothing is reported to credit bureaus.

Getting your Rolex back

When you're ready, repay the loan at the counter and we hand your Rolex back to you. If you need more time, the loan can be extended. Talk to us before the loan expires.

Pawn your Rolex or sell it?

We can usually offer more to buy a watch than to lend on it, because you're selling it outright. A pawn loan lets you keep it and pick it up when you repay. Ask for both numbers and decide at the counter.

Can I pawn or sell a Rolex or other luxury watch without the original box and papers?

Yes, you can sell or pawn a Rolex or another luxury watch at Barry's without its original box or papers. We regularly see watches without them, and while missing papers can affect the value, they're certainly not a dealbreaker.

A steel Rolex Datejust 41 with a silver dial, fluted bezel and Jubilee bracelet, with a Rolex warranty card

There's an important difference between the box and the papers. A replacement box can almost always be purchased, although there is a cost involved. Original papers are another story. For brands like Rolex that issue warranty cards or certificates specific to a watch's serial number, those original documents cannot simply be replaced if they're lost.

So how much does missing paperwork affect the value? That depends on the watch. On older models where missing papers are common, the difference might only be around 5–10%. On newer watches, where buyers generally expect the original warranty card, the difference is often closer to 10–20%. Rare or highly collectible watches can be affected even more.

It's not just about the price, either. Missing papers can also affect how easily a watch can be resold. For example, a newer Rolex without its original card may take longer to sell because some buyers simply won't consider purchasing one without it.

One thing I always tell customers is that having the box and papers does not prove a watch is authentic. I often ask, "What's harder to make, a watch or a piece of paper or plastic card?" If someone can make a convincing counterfeit Rolex, producing fake paperwork is certainly not going to be the difficult part.

The authenticity of a watch needs to be determined by examining the watch itself, not by relying on the paperwork that comes with it.

At Barry's Pawn & Jewelry in Boca Raton, we're happy to evaluate your Rolex or other luxury watch whether you have the original box and papers or not. They're helpful to have, but ultimately, it's the watch itself that matters most.

How do you check if a Rolex is real?

Authenticating a Rolex today is a lot more complicated than it was years ago. Some counterfeit watches have become incredibly convincing, and many of the things people used to rely on to spot a fake are no longer reliable.

I don't rely on any one test to determine whether a Rolex is authentic. I use a thorough, multi-point inspection process, starting with the least intrusive checks and working my way into the watch.

I start by examining the outside of the watch under magnification. I'm looking at the quality of the dial, hands, bezel, case, bracelet, and engravings. I'm also checking that everything is correct for that particular model and reference. A genuine Rolex can still have an aftermarket dial, bezel, or other replacement parts, so I'm not just checking whether the watch is real. I'm also checking whether its components are original and correct for that watch.

I then move on to specialized testing. I test the crystal to make sure it's the correct material, and I use an XRF analyzer to check the metal composition against what I'd expect from the factory.

Rolex also incorporates some incredibly intricate details into its watches, including the microscopic laser-etched crown found on the crystals of many modern models. These are additional things I examine, but no single feature is enough to establish authenticity.

If everything checks out on the exterior, I personally open the caseback and inspect the movement.

This is where things get particularly interesting. Counterfeit movements have improved dramatically over the years. Components that were once extremely difficult to reproduce, such as Rolex's free-sprung balance assembly, are now being copied.

I examine the movement's construction, balance assembly, escapement, finishing, engravings, and other internal components. I also inspect the inside of the caseback, the case and caseback threads, and the crown for signs of replacement or previous work.

It's a detailed process, and the specific things I look for depend on the model, its age, and the movement inside it.

Ultimately, authenticating a Rolex means looking at the watch as a whole. One correct detail doesn't make a watch genuine, and one unusual detail doesn't automatically make it fake. You need to understand how all the components are supposed to fit together.

That's the approach I personally take when evaluating Rolex and other luxury watches at Barry's Pawn & Jewelry in Boca Raton.

What determines how much Barry's can lend on a Rolex or other luxury watch?

What I can lend on a watch depends on its model, resale demand, condition, originality, and how easily I could resell it if the loan isn't repaid.

A watch's retail price, resale value, and pawn-loan value are three different things.

That's why I'd typically lend more against a $12,000 Rolex that's easy to resell than a $12,000 watch from a brand that's much harder to sell.

Market demand and liquidity matter just as much as the price you see online.

Do you buy or lend on vintage watches or watches that need service?

Yes, we buy and lend on vintage watches and watches that need service. We have an excellent watchmaker who specializes in Rolex, from vintage models to modern watches and everything in between.

A vintage stainless steel Rolex Submariner Date with a black dial and cream-colored hour markers and hands

A watch needing service isn't necessarily a big deal. Sometimes a watch has been sitting for years, the lubricants have dried up, and it simply needs a routine service. That's something we can account for when making an offer.

Where things get more complicated is when a watch needs replacement parts, especially on vintage or rare models. Certain parts can be difficult or expensive to source, and sometimes replacing them can actually hurt the watch's value.

For example, on a vintage Rolex Submariner, the dial and hands often develop a matching patina over time. Replacing a damaged dial or set of hands might make the watch look newer, but it could also take away some of its originality and collectibility.

That's why vintage watches are so condition-dependent. Sometimes the condition simply can't be improved without sacrificing originality.

When that's the case, we evaluate the watch based on what similar examples in comparable condition have actually sold for. We're happy to show customers those comparisons and explain how the condition affects our offer.

The bottom line is that a watch doesn't have to be perfect for us to be interested. We just need to understand what it needs, what can realistically be done, and what it's worth in its current condition.

Which Rolex models can I pawn?

We see the Submariner, Datejust, Daytona, GMT-Master and Day-Date most, along with other Rolex models. Bring the watch and a photo ID, and we'll look at it with you at the counter.

Can I get a quote on my Rolex before I come in?

Yes. Send photos of the dial, case back, clasp and any papers through the quote form, or text them to (561) 786-2431, and we'll get back to you.

Do I need good credit for a pawn loan?

No. A pawn loan is secured by your item, so there is no credit check and nothing is reported to credit bureaus.

How much can I get for my item?

It depends on the item, its condition and current gold and watch markets. We evaluate it in front of you and make an offer the same visit, or you can send photos first for a quote.

Would I get more if I sell instead of pawn?

Usually, yes. Selling pays the full value; a pawn loan lets you keep ownership. We'll give you both numbers so you can choose.
