How Are Diamonds Graded?

The 4cs (Carat Weight, Clarity, Cut, and Color) determine a diamond’s value.

More About Diamonds and Diamond Jewelry!

1. Carat weight

Using 200 milligrams as a “carat,” the weight of your diamond can be given within a hundredth decimal place.

Diamonds are precious gems mined from deep under the earth’s surface. A diamond represents a journey over time. It starts in the form of graphite-like you would find on the end of a pencil. Over hundreds of millions of years, under immense pressure and temperature, the carbon atoms found in the graphite are rearranged into a crystal structure.

Diamonds are mined by miners digging deep tunnels under the earth to collect rough diamonds, which are irregular-shaped, dirty, and dull. Only after they are mined, cleaned, cut, and polished do they look like they do when you are looking at diamonds to purchase.

Larger diamonds are rarer and thus more valuable. Because they were formed billions of years ago, few were able to survive the strenuous journey that brought them to the earth’s surface. Diamonds break even though they are incredibly durable, and only about 50 percent are considered high enough quality to be sold on the diamond market.

2. Diamond Clarity

Diamond Clarity refers to the absence of “inclusions” (substances, spots, etc. included in the structure of the diamond) and “blemishes” (external characteristics).

Because, as stated above, diamonds are created under pressure and heat, they have both inside and external characteristics that need to be evaluated by size, nature, position, and relief.

The purer a diamond is, the better the Clarity.

Clarity is appraised after looking at the diamond under powerful magnification and then determining what inside characteristics it has (inclusions), and the following ratings are given:

• Slightly Included (SI1 and SI2) Inclusions are noticeable under 10x magnification

• Included (I1, I2, and I3) Inclusions are noticeable under 10x magnification which may affect transparency and brilliance

Then a Diamond Clarity Scale is used to give the diamond an overall clarity rating.

• Flawless (FL) No inclusions and no blemishes visible under 10x magnification

• Internally Flawless (IF) No inclusions visible under 10x magnification

• Very, Very Slightly Included (VVS1 and VVS2) Inclusions so slight they are difficult for a skilled grader to see under 10x magnification

• Very Slightly Included (VS1 and VS2) Inclusions are observed with effort under 10x magnification but can be characterized as minor

3. Understanding Diamond Cuts

Knowing how your diamond is cut is essential in understanding your diamond’s value and ability to transmit light and sparkle. A diamond’s cut determines how much light the stone reflects. The light reflected from the diamond’s surface creates a brilliant sparkly gem full of fire and allurement. If the light doesn’t reflect correctly, it will appear not very interesting.

Some diamonds are round-cut diamonds, heart-shaped diamonds, oval diamonds, marquise-cut diamonds, princess-cut diamonds, and pear-shaped diamonds. A skilled gem cutter will know precisely how to cut a diamond so it interacts with the light to enhance its beauty and value.

The skilled gem cutter will enhance the quality of a diamond so that the diamond’s brightness, fire, and scintillation are exemplified.

  • Brightness: Internal and external white light reflected from a diamond
  • Fire: The scattering of white light into all the colors of the rainbow
  • Scintillation: The amount of sparkle a diamond produces, and the pattern of light and dark areas caused by reflections within the diamond

4. Diamond Color Means Lack of Color

A Diamond with no color, like a drop of water, is valued higher than a diamond with some color. All diamonds are evaluated from D (diamonds with no color) to Z (diamonds with color). A diamond expert, under controlled lighting, compares the diamond to “masterstones” to determine the absence of color and gives the diamond a rating.

Diamond Earrings

There are several options to consider when purchasing diamond earrings.

Solitaire Studs

A classic style, this type of earring has one stone in one setting. Most forms of diamond jewelry include solitaire pieces.

Halo Diamond Stud Earrings

These beauties are called halo diamond stud earrings because a center stone within a loop of smaller diamonds creates a “halo” effect around the middle stone.

Diamond Hoop Earrings

Diamond hoop earrings symbolize strength, and the hoop shows unity, infinity, and wholeness. They represent international fashion and are a staple of Latino culture.

Fancy Colored Diamonds Earrings

Fancy color diamonds exhibit color beyond the Z range. They come in every spectrum color, such as blue, green, pink, and red. The color grade of the diamond will determine how colorless diamonds are. For fancy-colored diamond stud earrings, you will want to pick diamonds that complement your skin tone, hair color, and metal from any other piercings.

Does The Setting Effect the Durability of a Pair of Diamond Studs?

After considering purchasing a pair of diamond stud earrings, you want them to last. Matters of beauty and durability are essential when choosing a setting for your diamond stud earrings.

Prong Settings

One of the most popular settings is the prong setting. It is used in both earrings and rings. It also supports the diamond while providing an avenue for light to reach it from all angles. This gives the diamond a brilliant sparkle.

Prong settings are also known as claw settings; there can be eight, six, four, or three prongs. The number of prongs is often determined by how often the jewelry will be worn or if it is a high-contact piece like engagement rings.

Six “Prong Settings

Six prong settings to give a very high level of security to your diamond stud earrings. This provides durability even with everyday wear, and the number of settings gives a new appearance to the diamond.

The setting is best suited for 2.00 ct or above size diamonds. The setting can be used for any diamond and accentuates the roundness of a diamond, and the diamond may get lost beneath the number of prongs.

Four Prong Settings

Four prong settings provide diamond stud earrings with both balance and security. Because the diamond earrings are low-contact jewelry, the four prongs will give enough support to hold the diamond in place no matter the cut of the diamond.

Four prongs provide an open design and allow a good deal of light to reach the diamond to give it sparkle.

Four prong settings are perfect for diamonds below 2.00ct.

Three Prong Settings

Diamond rings and diamond engagement rings don’t do well with three-prong settings. Three-prong settings do well to provide support for diamond stud earrings. With fewer prongs, the diamond can be seen, and the light can give the diamond sparkle. Three prongs give diamonds an illusion of being more prominent than they are, and the diamond will look center stage. Three-prong settings are better suited for diamond stud earrings under 1.50 ct.

Precious Metals and Diamonds

The precious metal used to set your diamond earring studs affects the style of your studs.

Yellow Gold

Yellow gold gives a golden glow to diamond jewelry. It is classic and traditional. A round diamond cut set in yellow gold will work best with warm skin undertones.

White Gold

White gold is coated in rhodium, making it white. It is the most reflective of all the precious metals. Because of this, it will add to the sparkle of your diamond and bling effect. Whichever diamond shape you choose for your diamond stud earrings, using white gold for the setting will work best with cool skin undertones.

Rose Gold

Rose gold is unique, antique, and romantic. It has increased in its fashion appeal over the past few years. It is flattering for all skin undertones and presents a neutral tone against any diamond; round diamond, princess cut diamond, or another diamond shape.

Platinum

Platinum is a precious luxe metal, and it has a white hue and cool undertones that require less upkeep than gold and are hypoallergenic. Platinum doesn’t contain any nickel making it an ideal choice if you have nickel allergies.
